Notes |
Eleanor's birth is deduced from several pieces of evidence. Her year of birth is given by husband Francis giving her age at time of death. She had her first children at Newcastle indicating she had gone home to her mother for suppoer as was often the case with the first birth. Four Johnsons came to stay at various times. Alex and Thomas are recorded staying at Bishop Middleham in 1789 and then join Captains in 1792, so presumably are seamen. A John stays in 1793 and also joins a Captain. A Francis arrived at Whitby in 1813 and Joining the Aurora in 1816. There is also a note of a Thomas Johnson, ships captain, being murdered by his crew in 1816.
The Eleanor baptised in 1861 at All Saints, Newcastle was the daughter of a John. Baptisms for a John at All Saints include a Thomas in 1766 and a Francis in 1813 (the latter a fairly unusual name). There is no matching Alexander though there is a Chelsea Pensioner record for one born c1771. Cumulatively there is a case for Eleanor being the daughter of John Johnson and with Thomas, Alexander, John and Francis as her brothers - all seamen.
John Mewburn Levien claims that Eleanor was an actress (Whitby Gazetter 08 Nov 1929).
