  • Notes
    • From Henry VIII's time we start to see parish records being kept according to the decree of Thomas Cromwell. However the keeping of them was very patchy to begin with and did not really take off until the reign of Elizabeth I.

Various clusters of Mewburns appear and disappear in the early records leaving no clues as to whether or how they may be related.

What is clear is that the Mewburn spelling with a 'w' is preferred in North Yorkshire and that today's Mewburns seem largely descended from a collection of Mewburns found in the Cleveland area just south of the river Tees. Several families lived and farmed there in close proximity and it is unreasonable to argue that they are not related, though the degree of relationship cannot always be established from the records available.
